Litter Management
Awareness campaigns are a vital part of a litter managment strategy. It is therefore recommended that these campaigns be continued through interacton with schools and other community bodies.
Litter Removal in Lotus River Catchment
It is recommended that the following phased approach be used.
Phase 1A

Install an SCS trap at Little Lotus, adjacent to Montagu's Gift Road just before the suburb of Lotus River

Use alternative labour based litter removal in the upper reaches of the Lotus canal

Record litter loading data from the litter trap in the upper reaches of the Lotus River
Phase 1B

Use data from Phase 1A to inform trap design

Install SCS trap downstream of Springfield Road, Philippi.
Phase 2

Use Phase 1 to inform trap design

Install SCS trap downstream of 7th avenue, Lotus River

Install SCS trap downstream of 5th avenue, Grassy Park.
Phase 3

Use data from Phase 1 and 2 to inform trap design

Install a UWEM trap adjacent to Prince George Drive at the end of the canalised section of the Southfield canal.
