Background

Litter in waterways has become a global problem and is escalating on a local level. Since littering is classified as a social and behavioural problem, governments around the world are involved with awareness campaigns which seek to reduce litter at the source. These campaigns are unlikely to be completely effective and the removal of litter already in the waterways is required.

The Catchment, Stormwater and River Management (CSRM) division of the Roads and Stormwater Department in the City of Cape Town has asked for proposals to be made for litter managment in the Lotus River Catchment. This assessment must lead to the modelling and design of litter traps including the specification of their location.
