Method

The method used in this study is summarised below

Stage 1

All data required for the study was collected. This included GIS data from the City of Cape Town and UCT and rainfall data from the South African Weather Service.

Stage 2

Suitable trap sites were located along the three main canals in the Lotus River Catchment.

Stage 3

Litter loads were estimated based on previous studies and the land-use zones in the study area. A litter removal implementation strategy was developed based on the litter load distribution.

Stage 4

A hydrological assessment was completed using the PCSWMM computational hydraulics computer package. This was followed by the conceptual hydraulic design of the proposed traps.
